  • Grandma’s House

Grandma’s house is a special place. One of the most special places one could go in fact.

At Grandma’s house love abides and snacks are endless. Grandma knows all your favorites of  everything even though you’ve never even told her. That’s a special gift Grandma has. She  loves so well that part of that is knowing what makes you happy.

At Grandma’s house time seems to exist in a different sort of way. At Grandma’s house there is  never someone rushing you or anyone telling you to hurry. Grandma has a special pace that will  match whatever you want to do. If you want to adventure, she’s along for the ride, but she will  patiently teach you how to bake your favorite cookies or make your favorite foods or how to tie  your shoes (and she won’t get upset even though she’s already shown you how). Her lap is  always open for you to climb in and read books with until your eyes just can’t see straight. When  parents come to pick you up, you can hardly believe that it’s already time to go home. You just  got there, after all.

At Grandma’s house rules are just suggestions. Activities like jumping on the bed or pulling all  the toys off the shelf at once are allowed. The coffee table that is guarded well at home is  perfectly fine to sit or stand on at Grandma’s house. This same concept applies to food too.  While at home with parents you have to eat your veggies first, at Grandma’s, dessert is a food  group and it can be eaten first!

While everything around you seems to always change, Grandma’s house never does. At  Grandma’s house things always stay the same. Everything is always in the same place, usually  right where you left it. The clock always ticks and tocks and dings on the hour, the oven timer is  always ticking away as your favorite treats are in the oven. The smell is always one of cookies  and peppermint, too. Even the pictures you color for her are always her favorite treasures and  they always remain hanging on her wall or refrigerator forever.

Though the world outside can sometimes get scary, nothing is ever scary at Grandma’s house.  Problems don’t exist when you go there . They all seem to fade away as you go inside.

Grandma’s house is a very special place, all these reasons make it so. But more than all these  reasons though, what makes it so very special is Grandma. It’s the special way it is because  she’s there!

Grandmas are truly special people and I was truly blessed with the very best. She was a  constant source of comfort in a world that can get tumultuous. She could take your mind off of  any worry you might have, but when you were ready to talk, she would always have a solution  to your problem. The world will always feel different now that she’s not here, but as she was the  very best at everything, she was the best teacher. She was a teacher who taught us to love and  love well. To extend grace and gratitude before judgement. To open the doors of our home to all  and to feed them well once they’re inside. She taught these lessons and so many more and now  it’s time for us to carry the torch in her honor. We might not get the torch to shine quite as  brightly, but we owe it to her to try.

About Me

My name is Amy Ellard and this space is for sharing the stories I grew up hearing my grandparents and parents tell. They have all passed away, but telling their stories is a way for me to keep their memories alive and well and to inspire me to “live a life worth telling stories about!”
